Windows above level extrusion height not appearing on rooms set to be top exposed

Windows that are above the extrusion height (here at 12’) are not appearing in the preview unless the extrusion height is set much higher. However this causes problems with the rooms that dont align perfectly with their respective roof then also being the new extrusion height. Windows appear correctly in the window selector preview and are all set to export. This model is a single story so all rooms are set as top exposed and ground contact.

Hi @aislas, thank you for including the images.

We have recently improved this case in the latest version of the Revit plugin and the Model Editor V2 which removes the need to adjust the extrusion height for the windows to show up, as long as the top exposed is set correctly. Try downloading the latest version, and switch to V2 and the problem should be resolved. See here for the announcement: We Didn't Make it to AU, So We're Releasing the Model Editor V2 for You Instead

If you want to stay in the current version of the Model Editor, you only need to change the height for the rooms with windows on top instead of changing it for all the rooms in the model. That should address the issue that you mentioned here.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

That makes sense. Is there a way for me to verify which version of the revit plugin I am currently using? I have been using V2 model editor this week but never went back to make sure I was using the right version of revit plugin

Yes. Click on the About button in the Pollination ribbon and you should be able to see the version of the Pollination.Revit.{revit-version}. See here:

I just pushed version 2.289.1 as a new version that can be downloaded.

Nice! And what do you think about the improvements from V1? Do you have any feedback for us? Anything that you feel could be still improved?

I actually am enjoying the model editor a lot. Its isolation, hiding, and showing features are nice and intuitive. The new interface for viewing room, roof, and shades individually instead of table format is also helpful. And the highlighting validation errors is nice.

A new problem arose since I updated the revit plugin. The “create rooms” tab now doesnt show rooms open to top as before. Most of the rooms dont even read the roofs and just go to the extruded height. None of the export settings in the roof or windows/doors tabs were changed at all, let alone displaying upper windows in those spaces

Edit: And it also broke model editor. I can’t even switch back to model editor classic:

Is there a way to undo the update I just installed? I would rather just add the windows in IES at this point. The previous geometry was good enough

Hi @aislas,

This is most likely happening because the roofs are not being loaded. Did you click on the Select Roofs step and ensure all the roofs are selected to be exported. That should be the case by default. I will check this on my end but if you use the Select Roofs menu the issue should go away.

Ah! I’m sorry about that. That’s on me. I forgot to push the latest version to production. Can you try to close and re-open the Model Editor? The issue should go away now.

Yes. I can share the older installer with you if the refresh didn’t fix the problem.

Can you share your Revit model with me? You can share it via a private message, and I can record a video for you that shows the process for windows. I should have been more specific about what I said. What I mentioned works for the import windows workflow and inside the Model Editor.

I’m glad to hear that! Sorry about the other issues. You should now be all set if you close and re-open the Model Editor.

I checked this and the roof shows up as expected. Can you use the Select Roofs and ensure the Export Status for roofs are set correctly?

I also have a recommendation about this. :backhand_index_pointing_down:

You should try to minimize using the visualization in the Create Rooms panel. Once you get to the Model Editor, it is much easier and faster to edit and debug these. You can always import roofs and windows afterwards by exporting them from the Select Doors & Windows and Select Roofs menus, and then import them using the Import Windows and Import Roofs functionalities.

Now that I think about it, I can use the Revit sample model to record a video that explains this new workflow which will also resolve the issue about windows above the level extrusion not showing up in the model.

Hey Im sending a link to a screen recording I made to show the steps I went through. The model editor now works but its not showing many of the rooms that I created in the snapshot. Please let me know if there are any changes you can spot from the recording. I am not sure I can share the file outside of the company unfortunately.

Thank you for sharing the recording, @aislas!

You forgot to presee Ctrl + A to select the rooms in this step. Only one room is selected which is what you see in your exported PoMF. :backhand_index_pointing_down:

Awesome, yes this fixed the problem. Ok but after all of that, unfortunately all the of this the windows are still not appearing in model editor even after I have modified the heights of the specific rooms. This is not an issue so long as the windows will export to IES normally. Is there a way to re-import the windows into model editor after I have edited the heights of the rooms that have upper windows? Im not sure what the dependencies are and if the operations have a specific order before the windows host to the rooms

Here is an image showing Model Editor, Viewer, and a selected room with updated height

I have also attached the snapshot if its of use to you

Yes. Here is the process:

  1. Go back to the “Select Doors and Windows” menu, create the 3D preview, and the download them as an HBJSON
  2. Use Import Windows to import them into the cleaned up model.

Here is a recording that shows the process.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
